This might be a hot take but I’m still going for it.
CoD WWII spoilers. MWI spoilers. MWII spoilers. CoD Ghosts spoilers.
I think it’s very interesting to see the different viewpoints on the games. I’m only going to speak in binary terms of gender just to simplify a bit. (My enby and trans friends are still loved and so so so valid. I’m just spitting this out before I forget.)
The mostly male side of the fan base focuses on the weaponry, the combat, the missions and whatnot. That part of COD is what has kept me away from playing the games for so long.
Until my brother came to me absolutely sobbing after playing WWII. He was the classic dude bro who would think WWII was all that and a bag of chips. Seeing what Zussman had to go through, seeing Tanner’s sacrifice only to be pushed aside absolutely broke him. As his big sister, I was there to hold him as he cried real tears for these men.
The female part is the fan base mostly (I’m being really generous here. Ofc this doesn’t mean everybody but I’m just generalizing) cares about the men themselves. They care about the characters and their relationships. I’ve had long conversations with my little brother about the characters as if they were people rather than video game characters.
If you really think about it, the games are full of incredibly tender moments between brothers in arms. We see true selflessness in Alex Keller as he fully accepts a suicide mission from Farah for the sole reason that he believes in her cause.
We see Price find Kyle and form an incredibly strong bond together. They are with one another through thick and thin. We see Alejandro and Rudy have a strong brotherly relationship! Ghost actually WAITS in a very dangerous place for his buddy that’s injured, going so far as to help him through and keep him from panicking.
I know a lot of us (myself included) think these men are hot. But I think the truly most attractive thing about them is the true love and dedication they have for the causes they’re fighting for. That’s why I’ve always felt more drawn to core 141 rather than König or others. (I love them all but I don’t know their stories to be invested in them like I am 141)
Basically, these games have beautiful narratives about sacrifice, brotherhood and fighting for a cause. I feel like people don’t see the story in the game and just…play it. I remember playing through Ghosts with my dad. He had to hold me as Elias was killed by Rourke. I felt real emotions for the characters on screen. After the whole thing, my dad paused the game and wiped my tears, telling me how proud he was that I was able to FEEL for these fictional people. He always said my empathy was one of my strongest points.
I might be looking too deeply into this but I think that if people took the proper time to watch these games as if they were movies instead of games, a lot more could come out of them.
The human story is full of war and soldiers who shine bright against the chaos.
But it is also full of scared young men and women who just want to make a difference in the world.
War is not glorious. It’s not something to hold on a pedestal and say “those were the days”. Peace…is what we should all strive for. When people can just be people and be happy.
y’know…. conversations about world war ii would be a lot more bearable and constructive if white men found that period rightly horrific rather than pornographic

Vanguard’s Fresh Take on WWII: Character Depth and Epic Battles
No matter how much effort Activision and their Call of Duty squad put into each campaign, it’s wild how many players don’t even bother with the single player, let alone finish it, especially when so many people are eager to buy Xbox games and dive into the multiplayer modes. That said, the World War II vibe has always hit different since the series dropped back in 2003. Even though we know how the real-world conflict wraps up, the stakes feel way higher, and the war stories just hit closer to home. Vanguard isn’t as grounded as Call of Duty WWII was. You’re rolling with a top-tier squad trying to wipe out the last of the Nazi regime as Berlin falls apart. After a failed mission, Arthur Kingsley and his crew get caught by Hermann Freisinger (Dominic Monaghan), and the later chapters dive into each character’s backstory. It’s a bit of a fresh take for a CoD campaign, but it still goes back to the roots with its war-hopping action. You get just enough time with each Vanguard member to care about them, plus some epic set pieces. Props to the writers for making the Nazis seem like delusional rats, giving Freisinger and his crew some serious screen time.
Champion Hill and Patrol Mode: Fresh Takes on Call of Duty’s Classic Gameplay
More options aren’t always a bad thing, but lately, I’ve been struggling with how many loadout customizations there are in Call of Duty’s multiplayer, especially when I’m trying to decide which PS5 games to buy next. It’s super detailed, making you grind for hours to unlock a gun’s full potential. Even though Vanguard is set in World War II, it’s still loaded with options. Still, I’ve felt less outgunned in multiplayer; it’s not like I need every single weapon attachment to get the win. Call of Duty’s gunplay is as punchy as ever, with a retro arsenal of weapons. Sledgehammer might have taken us back in time, but it’s still got familiar mechanics from 2019’s Modern Warfare and Cold War Black Ops. Compared to WWII, Vanguard’s maps are way more mobile and interactive. With things like doors, destructible walls, double sprint, and cover-mounting, this year’s game has leveled up the COD formula. There’s a ton of multiplayer content to sink your teeth into. Beyond a dope list of maps (including classic ones like Dome and Castle from World at War), there are fresh game modes to try out. Champion Hill is kind of like Auto Chess, where eight teams (duos or trios) go head-to-head in quick one-on-one rounds. You start with basic gear that you can upgrade between rounds as you earn cash. Vanguard’s Patrol mode isn’t super groundbreaking but adds a cool spin on domination/hardpoint with a moving objective area. Overall, this year’s Call of Duty has a faster flow and feels more balanced. It’s hooked me more than Modern Warfare or Black Ops Cold War ever did.
Mastering Der Anfang: Progression Tips and the Rewarding Grind
What started as a fun bonus mode in Call of Duty: World at War has evolved into Zombies, which has been changing up for over a decade. It’s not always a glow-up each year, though – this is the first time since 2008 that I’ve actually been hyped about Zombies, thanks to a much-needed revamp. Der Anfang continues the Dark Aether saga, with Treyarch wrapping up the Vanguard trilogy. You and up to three friends are summoned to Stalingrad, where you’ll hang out between rounds, dive into demonic portals, and complete objectives before being teleported back. This isn’t the same Nazi Zombies I loved in World at War. It doesn’t have that same vibe of dread as the undead tear through barricades and overwhelm you. Der Anfang lets you play for hours, with a steady stream of guns, perks, and extras. Returning to a central hub between rounds changes up the Zombies formula, but it makes the mode easier to get into compared to older versions. I got a better grip on how to progress in Der Anfang, what resources to stash, and which unlocks to save up for. Sure, you’ll repeat the same objectives, making those first dozen rounds feel a bit grindy on repeat runs. It takes a bit to ramp up the difficulty, but with shared XP and weapon progression with Vanguard’s multiplayer, it never feels like a waste of time.
Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Stellar Package: A Balanced Hit with No Weak Links
The stars have aligned for Call of Duty: Vanguard. For the first time, it really feels like a complete package with no weak spots. Sure, some parts are stronger than others, but there’s no obvious weak link. After a series of wins, Call of Duty is totally on a killstreak.

It's 2007, one of the best years of gaming. You had a lot of heavy hitters like Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Rock Band, Bioshock, Halo 3, Portal, Crysis, Super Mario Galaxy, God Of War III, The Witcher, Mass Effect, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and so on. Yet, out of all those games, I chose to play through an outright class, Medal Of Honor Airborne. Yes, CoD may have been going all Modern Warfare on everyone and Medal of Honor is over still doing WWII games.
So, what sets Airborne apart from other WWII Medal Of Honor games? Well, you get to jump out of a plane at the start of every mission and every single time you die, you do the jump again, with some exceptions. To be honest, I find the jumping mechanic to be poorly explained. The tutorial explains stuff pretty poorly in my opinion because it makes you jump like three times and then you're done and it doesn't matter if you do the landings really well or really poorly either. I pretty much botched every landing I did in the game and I did not care at all because it's not like that affects me during the mission. Ultimately, I found the jumping mechanic to be pretty pointless as it doesn't affect anything at all.
The games runs well enough. There are some visual glitches that don't harm the game but, make it kind of funny. In the very last campaign mission, there were elevator platforms with crates on them that were just popping in and out of existence and when I'd stand on them, it would make my weapons do the same thing too. I just would it kind of funny when stuff like that would happen.
The AI is absolutely stupid af. More than half the time, my ally soldiers would just go to spots and stay there so I am charging into groups of enemies by myself most of the time. When it's just basic enemies, that was fine because I could handle it. But, when it's a section like the bridge where there are like ten guys with rocket launchers and a damn tank...that makes my life just a smallest bit more difficult when my allies are absolutely useless. I know it's a game from 2007 but, that the could be a little bit better.
Outside of those few things, Airborne isn't all that bad of a game. It doesn't even look all that dated graphically, especially if you play any of the other games that I mentioned at the start. Plus, despite only having like five campaign levels, those levels are like 40 minutes long because they give you these large maps with four or five objectives to hit on each map and I really like that a lot. Kind of reminds me of Battlefield V only having five campaign that were an hour or more long because of having multiple objectives on them. I'd definitely recommend playing this game if you have not.

CoD Notes WWII, BO4, BOCW, Vanguard:
I like CoD WWII a lot but didn’t finish the campaign because it erased my mid-mission progress after a particularly grueling and unfun airplane level.
The multiplayer of any of these old games just can’t appeal to me when everyone left is way too good at the game.
WWII zombies is fun in theory but I just don’t have it in me to google guides and walkthroughs for every single map.
BO4 obviously has the worst “campaign”. They could’ve tried harder to have an interesting narrative out of the cutscenes or had just…more. It just sucks. BO4 is a strange game overall, feels like an attempt to be more like competitive shooters.
BO4 zombies is almost too easy with bots and easy mode, and I got the “ick” after 2 long runs.
Black Ops Cold War has a pretty fun campaign. I really enjoyed the mental interrogation mission and choosing the “bad” ending. Stealth missions fun.
Vanguard wasn’t as bad as I expected but it still has bizarre writing and the constant flashbacks undermine the plot. I enjoyed the gameplay but it’s clearly a downgrade from WWII. Did one round of Shi No Numa and didn’t care for it.

Ghosts, the missions and characters in it were awesome and the fact that it ending on a cliffhanger is honestly torture.

A few missions have hurt, like the ending of Infinite, the death of Roach & Ghost, stuff like that, but I've never cried.

Actual Time Taken: 4 hours because you told Tony to take the scenic route.
He took you to Italy for your guys’ honeymoon and had the most lavish plans: dinner on the Duomo, an entire day of shopping at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, cliff diving on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, climbing the rocks by the sea downtown in Riomaggiore, and so much more. While you loved all of that, you really just wanted to do Milan to Florence by car and he happily obliged, immediately telling Happy to cancel the private jet because he loved you so much. He brings back the most lavish car he could find: an open-hood, two-seater, red Ferrari Portofino. AC/DC is blasting the entire time and you two are having the time of your life, scream-singing along to every single song. When you’re singing “Back In Black” without a seatbelt, just letting the wind fly through your hair, not a care about anything in the world is when he realizes how lucky he is to have you.

Actual Time Taken: 18 hours because you may or may not have speeded while he took a nap.
You had figured out the entire “adjusting to a new century” thing was really stressful on Steve, so you decided to take him to the National WWII Museum just so he could bridge the gap a little bit better. Plus, you figured it would help him destress a little bit. The road trip is normal; he took the wheel for the majority of the time because you had just gotten back from a mission a couple of days ago and were still exhausted. You helped him pick out a couple of old songs from the 30s and 40s to listen to while driving which really improved his mood. When you get there you get excited because of the memorabilia and start asking because you’re genuinely curious; it’s in that moment that he realizes how much you love him.

Estimated Time: 10 hours
Actual Time Taken: 11 hours because you may or may not have forced him to try a Waffle from Waffle House after you had heard he’d never had one. One waffle turned into five.
Steve had banned you from going on any more missions for two weeks after Bruce found out you had a really bad concussion which you’d been hiding. This led to creeping into Bucky’s room at two a.m., dodging a metal arm, and asking if he wanted to go on a road trip. He was still a bit jumpy but intrigued by the idea, so you two had your things and were out of the tower by three a.m. You made a couple of stops along the way to show him some more twenty-first century staples and made it there by two p.m., giving you guys time to check into a hotel (which you may or may not have reserved using Tony’s credit card) and take a nap before waking up for dinner by the sunset. It’s when he’s watching you squeal about how pretty the sunset is that he realizes he wants to marry you.

Actual Time Taken: 5 hours because he kept making you pull over the car so he could look at different animals and landscapes.
It all started when Thor burst into your room with one of Tony’s StarkPads, showed you Cape Cod, and asked you to take him. You asked him why he couldn’t go by himself, and he said he wanted “to experience the joy of trips on the road as you Midgardians do!”. You laughed and agreed, telling him to meet you downstairs in the garage in an hour. Once you two were on the road, he kept on having you pull over the car so he could fanboy over different animals and talk about how pretty the scenery was. You two were watching the sunset when he saw how beautiful you looked, slowly leaned in, and kissed you.

Estimated Time: 6 hours and 30 minutes
Actual Time Taken: 7 hours and 30 minutes because 30 minutes in you realized it wasn’t Loki sitting next to you, it was a copy of him. Obviously, you had to go back.
You were tired of New York City’s downtown and wanted to go check out Niagara Falls, so you dragged Loki along with you. After the entire “illusion” trick he thought you’d leave him alone, but you were determined to show him around Earth before he had to leave for Asgard. The ride was full of him complaining until you called Natasha and she threatened him—you’re not sure how—but he shut up after that. He genuinely seemed to enjoy the downtown, even agreeing to try some cotton candy when you asked him if he wanted some. The wax museum confused him, because “Why would you take pictures with sculptures you know are not real?”. He played a couple of tricks here and there, but too serious where anyone would get hurt; just funny enough to make you laugh as hard as you could. When you suggested having a bunch of fudge for dinner and trespassing the Falls’ gates, he realized he was falling in love with you.

Estimated Time: 24 hours: 8 hour drive, 8 hour rest, 8 hour drive.
Actual Time Taken: 16 hours. Straight.
This baby really wanted to go to Harry Potter World, so you made a plan with May to take him there for his birthday. She had to work so she trusted you both to drive there without getting arrested (you both almost did, but it’s fine). You two were planning to do it in two days, like any logical teenagers would, but after all the candy and soda Peter buys from the gas station, you two are way too hyped up on sugar to go to sleep and manage to do sixteen hours straight while blasting cliché pop. A memory you’ll never forget is when you were going forty miles above the speed limit and laughing while Peter screamed about how you were going to kill someone because you were going so fast. You two have the biggest sugar crash when you get back to the hotel and end up just ordering room service and cuddling for an entire day but hey, who’s complaining?

Actual Time Taken: 2 hours and 30 minutes because you guys made a couple of stops.
Bruce is a chill guy and when he found out you needed to take a break, he recommended a drive along the coast which you agreed to because you desperately needed to get out of the lab. He drove you both by the coast, most of the time you stuck your head out the sunroof so you could smell the salty air and feel the ocean breeze. You both started out with small science talk but by the time you two got to Atlantic City it was much deeper: talking about your passions, plans for the future, and where you saw the world in ten, twenty, thirty years. He sheepishly asked you out during dinner and you laughed, asking him “Isn’t this one?”.

Actual Time Taken: 45 minutes; Natasha really likes to speed.
Natasha decided you both needed a treat and decided to force you to come and spend a weekend at Long Island with her. Because she never really had a childhood, you decide to recreate what a normal trip to the beach would be like: windows down, music blaring, buying ice and beer from a gas station, bluetooth speakers for the beach, surfboards, and volleyball. The day is fun but definitely exhausting and while you two are watching the sunset on a towel, you realize how much she really means to you and she decides she wants more than to be just friends.

Actual Time Taken: 8 hours. Kudos, you guys stayed on schedule.
He had noticed you were a bit more uptight after the entire Erik Killmonger situation happened, so once he was cleared for air travel he booked two tickets to San Francisco. It was upon landing that you revealed you really wanted to go to Las Vegas but were sick of planes, so the mutual decision of driving to Las Vegas was made. It’s mostly a chill road trip, minus the three hour period around twelve a.m. where you two were screaming, laughing, and speeding at least twenty miles over; you’re not sure what caused that. You two talk about your plans in life and have a couple of deep conversations. You two make it to Las Vegas and sleep off the jet lag. When he sees you in your evening gown ready for dinner, he just knows that you’re the one.

Call of Duty: WWII was free on PS4 this month (basically to pump sales of the expansions), thought I might as well play the campaign
Man, I forgot how much I hate CoD writing. Like the Battlefield games tell war stories with missions set in significant operations or theaters, but CoD is like caricature stuff where your character is personally central to every memorable event.
Like there's a mission that's reminding me of the WWI-set Battlefield One, and maybe it's the different tone in re: WWI vs WWII, but there victory is understood as "you survived, and through some objective played a part as the war machine advances another push" and here it's like "fresh off personally leading the Resistance to liberate Paris, you turn the tables in a Kraut city by personally winning the air war from the ground, leading a decisive tank battle, and clearing the stronghold with your men"

Ex-CoD Kid’s Thoughts on the New One
I wanna talk about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This is 2019′s Call of Duty game (there is one every year). This is a little confusing because it is a reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series that started with 2007′s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The first three Call of Duty games were set in World War II, which is funny since the whole series is now associated with a modern or near-future setting in most of the games, to the point where 2017′s Call of Duty: WWII stood out by being set in World War II again, which hadn’t been done since 2008′s Call of Duty: World at War (which was the first one to ditch the numbers and also the first one I got into as a kid).
Anyways, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (the 2019 game, which I will now call MW) is one of the biggest leaps the series has taken in a while. These games are kind of notorious for not changing much from entry to entry. The Call of Duty franchise is also kind of notorious for alternating between three different developers in order to crank out a game every year. This gets a little weird because obviously the franchise as a whole shares a lot of traits and code in common, but for example, the Modern Warfare subseries and its corresponding characters can only be touched by one of the three developers, while another of the developers has exclusive rights to the Black Ops subseries and its characters. All this to say that yes, a new Call of Duty game, but the folks (Infinity Ward) who make it only get to make a new one every third year (formerly every other year until the PS4/Xbox One era).
Well, I guess what I mean to say here is that the Call of Duty games tend to be two steps forward, one step back. There’s actually relatively little consensus on which features to include or throw away between games. 2018′s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 got rid of regenerating health, only for 2019′s MW to bring it back, but also bring back Black Ops 4′s healthkit item. Imagine that times a hundred every year. Even Call of Duty fans usually don’t agree on which features should return or not.
So with that all being said, MW introduces the most new features that I can recall in a Call of Duty going all the way back to its namesake (CoD4) which either invented or popularized the modern model for picking a loadout and unlocking new items for it. I want to run through a few of them and why I like them.
1 - Attachments Reborn
Call of Duty has long featured attachments for guns as an integral part of multiplayer gameplay. At first, you would have to pick between a scope or a silencer or more bullets. The red dot sights were so popular that some of the games introduced ways to have multiple attachments, but at the cost of other parts of your loadout, such as forgoing grenades. MW finally, gloriously allows you to have up to five attachments on your gun with no tradeoff.
It also features far more attachments than before, up to 70 on some guns as opposed to the dozen or so maximum before. This is because there are multiple subvariants of suppressor, stock, laser, nearly two dozen scopes even if they mostly fall under a handful of categories. This also means that attachments are less of a pure upgrade and more of a trade off, but this means you can transform almost every gun into more of a short range weapon or long range weapon. It’s really satisfying to transform a gun into something it’s not, especially when you need to for...
2 - Camo Challenges
Call of Duty the last decade has featured unlockable camouflage patterns as a reward. At first, they were an incentive to get headshots with each weapon, then later special camo challenges would be unlocked after getting all the headshot-based camos. MW skips that first step and has you unlocking  ten categories of camo challenges, each with ten camos each as you complete the specific task. At first, the challenges are things like getting kills, getting headshots, getting kills while crouching, but later they become getting 3 kills in a row, getting kills from far away, etc.
What this essentially means is that every single gun in the game has 100 little milestones of progress and each of those milestones has a tangible cosmetic reward that even other players can see. After getting all 100 camos for a gun, you get the 101st camo: Gold! But it gets better: getting Gold for every gun one of a certain type (assault rifle, pistol, etc.) unlocks Platinum for all guns of that type! One step further: getting Platinum for every gun type (and thus Gold for every gun) unlocks Damascus (named after Damascus Steel), which is a cool multicolored camo. More importantly, it shows that you spent a lot of time getting these challenges done. And most importantly, it basically means that you can “beat” the multiplayer of MW.
I really like this because it gives me a goal to work towards, even if I don’t stand much of a chance of ever actually completing. It was really cool to pick a gun as my favorite right off the bat then use it at close range, long range, etc. as I completed all the milestones and unlocked all 100 camos for it, which let me “beat” that gun and move on to the next one. On one hand, I can see how the game becomes less fun when it is just a grind for these camos, but on the other hand, it is really cool to have a goal to work towards, and I have never felt as attached to the unlocks in a Call of Duty since I was a kid. I’ve almost never played Hardcore mode (a Call of Duty staple that takes away your crosshair and minimap and reduces everyone’s health) but it has become my go-to for getting some of these challenges done, and now I really have a taste for it.
3 - The Rest
MW has a bunch of other little new features that aren’t as life changing, but I wanted to mention anyways. The visuals, animation, and sound design are much improved and much more realistic. The gun sways so much more realistically as you walk forward, for example. The nighvision missions of the single player mode particularly look realistic since they’re just green. The campaign itself is much better than other recent Call of Duty’s, but it is still ultimately forgettable at the end of the day if slightly more enjoyable. I did appreciate that it gives you rewards for the multiplayer mode instead of expecting you to play it just to play it. MW also brings back the Spec Ops coop mode from prior games but with unlocks and XP tied to multiplayer, which is nice, but I’d rather just play multiplayer.
Speaking of, MW lets you toggle which modes you do or don’t want to play online instead of having to pick one mode to play, which is nice because otherwise, certain modes never get played online, especially as the game ages. Also this CoD features special “Missions” that you have to commit to focusing on one at a time that unlock free gun cosmetics (slightly different looking attachments and versions of guns) that offer yet another way to be rewarded for just playing the game, while also helping to make me experience different playstyles.
Of course, this CoD also features a free battle royale mode that seems to be a big success, and I enjyo it fairly well, but it can’t compare to the nonstop action of normal multiplayer. Also this CoD features crossplay sorted by controller typer, so I can get matched with Xbox players or PC players but only if they’re using a controller rather than a mouse and keyboard. This is great because it lets me play the free battle royale mode with my dad on my PC while he is on the PS4, so we can each have our own screen.
Also I appreciate that this game offers splitscreen at all, even if it can’t be used in battle royale, Spec Ops coop mode, or even the larger multiplayer maps such as the brand new Ground War, which features big maps, vehicles, and selectable spawn points just like the FPS competitor Battlefield. It feels a little janky, but it is nice to have the option when I need to blow up vehicles or shoot people from very far away for a challenge.
Oh, you can also reload while aiming down the sights. That’s new. Plus you can mount your gun on a waist high surface to reduce recoil, but it just ends up being annoying since you are forced to do it for challenges. Also this is minor, but certain weak killstreaks or overpowered perks have been turned into “field upgrades”, a usable ability with a cooldown. I like this because they’re not quite like an “ultimate ability” in Overwatch or Black Ops 3/4, but they add a tiny bit of a skill ceiling and agency.
Oh! This is also the first CoD in a long time to not feature a 50 dollar season pass that just provides a little over a dozen multiplayer maps. For context, the other big shooters (Rainbow Six, Counter Strike, Overwatch, Paladins, Battlefield) don’t charge for maps and haven’t in years, since it just divides the playerbase and makes matchmaking harder.
This CoD also doesn’t lock new guns behind lootboxes, which had become a big problem for the last several games. Furthermore, this game doesn’t feature lootboxes at all, which is a new development in the right direction. Instead, this game has pricey (10-20 bucks) cosmetic bundles in the style of Fortnite and a battle pass (again like Fortnite, but almost every game has this now).
Conclusion
So what’s the takeaway? Well, I know Call of Duty is a very popular game that doesn’t need defending, but I really think this new one is special and very much pro-consumer. I refused to get excited for it before release after years of microtransaction-riddled cash grabs, but this one is a real breath of fresh air. There is a lot of content here, and they provide more for free. You get to play all the new maps and modes for free and unlock the new guns for free. The battle royale and normal multiplayer are both getting a lot of support and constant content. I just hope this game doesn’t drive off the edge of a cliff when this year’s new game comes out, but that is a whole other topic (there are rumors, but nothing has been confirmed about this year’s Call of Duty if there even is one. It would need to come out pretty soon, despite no information about it existing. If there isn’t one, it would be the first year since 2004 without one, but this most recent game has been pretty exceptional in my opinion and Corona couldn’t be predicted).

Am I losing my shit about fanfiction again? You BET! It’s time for Tell to lose her goddamn mind about some truly awful fanfic! It’s my blog, I get to do what I want! And that’s to talk about how people are more blessed than they believe since they didn’t read this!
Today I’m going to talk about Super Smash Sisters: Damsel to Hero. Given the title uses a word like Damsel in it and it’s rated M, this is going to be GREAT
content warning for well what do you think a horny man on the internet would write ie: cheating, incest, terrible depictions of women being horny, violence (I don’t explain any of this in detail so you’re welcome. but it is mentioned) I’m not linking this thing because you guys don’t deserve this.
It took me forever to finish the entire fic, and I actually wrote most of this before finishing. You may say “Wait a second Tell, you need to fully read the work in order to discuss it!” No I do NOT. Trust me, this doesn’t need to be finished to understand. I needed moral support for this, I couldn’t have possibly read this by myself. I feel really sorry for my poor friends that have to deal with this horse shit with me because it’s kind of got a bit of je ne sai completely godawful. I’m semi tough and can stomach some senseless nonsense pretty nicely, but the real heroes here are my friends for toughing out the rampant sex and terrible female character writing all mixed with Call of Duty plot and characters. You thought this was about Smash Bros? WRONG! 
I know exactly jack about the author, Yamagata, other than they are probably some poor horny straight guy in high school or maybe a genius troll. We just don’t know. Either way they were pretty dedicated. The fic itself is 91,621 words and 45 chapters, and apparently on hiatus but we all know hiatus is just another word for dead. It’s better off that way. All good awful fics end on a cliffhanger.
The premise, as the title implies, is that all the men of Smash are kidnapped by nazis or some shit after a failed drug raid and it’s up to all the women to save them of which there are Zelda, Peach, and Samus because this was written in the Brawl era. You might think “Wait, isn’t that not a lot of female characters?” right you are! The author decides to bring in tons of female characters from all sorts of video games and anime. A personal favorite is a major character in this fic is Bright Noah from Gundam, notably not a woman. I love him! I’m disappointed he hasn’t slapped anyone yet! What’s the point of importing Bright Noah into a fanfic if he isn’t going to deliver a Bright Slap? Sorry folks, there’s gonna be me getting distracted about Gundam once in a while.
I can’t remember exactly what happens because the chapters really blur together quickly. They’re almost always first half violence in COD land and second half really bad lesbian sex scenes. See, the title is a misnomer. The women don’t actually do a lot of hero work. It’s still handled by men. Ones who aren’t even from Smash Bros. Bright Noah and another guy called Hargrove who I’m not familiar with are constantly telling the women what to do and while the women sometimes go on missions to fight Nazis or whatever, half the time we’re following some random male characters. A good friend had no idea one of them was Tuxedo Mask because they used his dub name and we spent like ten chapters with this idiot before realizing it was him. They just spend their time fighting different various enemies from real life as opposed to smash. So the guys fight and then the women all fuck because when your boyfriend is missing you have to immediately bang the nearest female out of grief. It’s not cheating if it’s gay! Even worse is there’s a lot of incest because apparently that’s how women act, too. Also for some reason when the women DO fight it plays exactly like the men’s side but with Bright Noah just telling them what to do. Also for some reason Peach just fucking kills people and I’m not really sure how to deal with that. Like, yeah, I guess.
Let’s try to do a plot recap but that’s going to be difficult because I’m not sure what the plot is. Okay, in theory, I do. But we’re just circling around and doing the same thing so many times that I’m plain lost. 
In theory, the plot is as mentioned before. The men of Smash get kidnapped and turned to trophies by Nazis. I’m noting that besides Nazis the men are all brutally murdered in order to turn them into trophies. Then it turns out that Samus, Peach, and Zelda are safe because they were at the Smash Mansion cleaning and having sex as princesses and bounty hunters are known to do. Then they find out from Bright that the men have been kidnapped so they have to form a task force against them. So there’s a long ass paragraph of characters, many of which do not have speaking lines until much later anyway, but they’re all female characters from other games or anime. I’m really into Fire Emblem and there’s a bunch of those so time to cry. Bright has to tell these women to stop being so damn emotional and be ready to start murdering. 
Also in the first chapter, we have the reveal of the villain, some Tabuu knock-off named Emerald. She too recruits a ton of villainous characters who all introduce themselves AFTER THEY’VE BEEN RATTLED OFF IN PARAGRAPH FORM. You didn’t get it the first time? They’re all going to painstakingly state their name and identity. Admittedly it’s kind of funny to have Cell in a room with Liquid Snake and Ashnard. Also who invited Valtome? They didn’t even invite Zelgius. Maybe our favorite Begnion General figured out that a certain thirsty ass senator was gonna be there and stayed in bed today. Okay, fewer tangents, I promise. 
With the establishing of all the villains and heroes, everything instantly turns to shit. Half the time we’re not even following a group who’s connected to the main characters and when we are with the main characters they are either having terrible sex or shooting nazis. This sounds like it’d be funnier than it is but it’s really Grade A Depressing. I can’t tell what’s going on or why and since I have exactly no knowledge of Call of Duty I’m afraid I don’t know anything about our actual protagonists either. Every chapter starts with some pretentious usually WWII related quote and involves some guys dying and then some ladies bonking. It’s the same format every time and after a while I feel like this is some advanced torture method. 
Among the bad sex is for some reason moms are banging their elementary school age daughters because their husbands are out. Women are so horny they’d rather fuck their children than wait long enough for their husbands. It’s so messed up. My eyes naturally glaze over on the sex scenes because they’re kind of clinically written and something about cute pussies or whatever. I feel bad for Bright Noah, he has to break up these badly written orgies to talk more about the nonexistent plot. Bright Noah needs a raise. All in all the sex is something that maybe a 13 year old boy might find hot if he hasn’t managed to read all the other way better smut fics out there. If 13 year old boys even do things like that. 
Since there’s no way for me to coherently walk through the plot since each scene hardly seems to amount to anything besides either violence or a roll in the hay, I’ll just have to start briefly talking about the few notable things that happen, probably out of order. Who the fuck even knows what chapters these happened in? I sure don’t! 
First off, a lot of the women conscripted into the task force have supernatural powers but they’re just given guns. I also think the author has something for Krystal or whatever since we focus on her a lot for no good reason. The women are also often infiltrating secret bases to nazis or other bad guys that I’m not as well versed in because admittedly I’m not that interested in the history of warfare, modern or old. I just assume this is a COD thing. But in order to infiltrate the bases, they just wave papers at literally every guy they come across and that does it somehow. I started going ballistic and every time they mentioned papers I would start screeching again. They get stopped by some dude and he’s always like “Where are your papers?” and they ALWAYS have the papers and then they go past but the author FEELS THE NEED TO KEEP BRINGING IT UP. It’s like The Black Fucking Mountains again. Something I’ve learned about myself is that I do poorly with overly repetitive writing, so I wonder why I’m reading world’s most repetitive piece ever penned for fun. I can’t recall anything that happens in any chapters.
Somewhere in the mix they actually save Ike, Marth, and Roy. Somehow the most in character thing in the entire fic happens with them when it’s offhandedly mentioned that they sometimes dogpile into the same bed as a joke. What was more shocking to me is that suddenly Ike is a total nuclear bomb genius out of nowhere. Sure, he’s from a medieval fantasy setting, he knows what nukes are. We finally get some more plot. Apparently Emerald is trying to develop some insanely powerful nuke in order to destroy the trophies of the remaining captured heroes. See, she’s holding them ransom so she can get… money? Power? Fame?
Trying to do this from memory is so hard. I did My Inner Life practically all from memory, only going in there for the copy and pasted quotes! What the heck? This fic just slides off my brain. I don’t know if finishing it is even worth it since it’s not like I’m reading any of the sex scenes in detail (I mean why would I, a woman with decent taste, want to read about usagi feeling up chibi usa) and I sure as hell can’t understand the Call of Duty parts so in conclusion this fic really wasn’t targeted at me. 
But whatever. So now the main crew has to slaughter their way to bomb storage or development or something. Some of the COD guys died and I didn’t notice, some of the villains died (tragically Valtome was K.I.A.) and all in all too much sex was happening. Seriously, Mist has sex on her brother’s bed, that’s kind of nasty. I don’t know why I’m so hung up on all of that. It’s like the piss drinking thing, it’s a minor offense in a long line of “HOLY FUCKING SHIT” but here’s where I get derailed. 
How many times can I say that this fic is terrible? Because it is. I don’t understand who a lot of these characters are and why they’re here or what they’re doing. I managed to read to the end and all that I learned was Shadow the Hedgehog apparently cheated on Rouge with some guy called Makarov who is another major villain. What, so when Rouge cheats on him with another woman it’s fine, but when he cheats on her with a man he gets killed for it? I smell double standard! Don’t worry, I’m a feminist, I support equal rights of everyone getting punished for their perpetual horniness. Still, there’s this shocking turn of events where the men are somehow the ones who aren’t constantly obsessed with sex and the women are going around topless and banging each other constantly while homosexuality in men is seen as evil and wrong. For some reason I think the person who wrote this might be a man. He feels the need to remind us, 40 chapters in, that there will be No Yaoi scenes but plenty of Yuri. No shit dude, like, fuck! I didn’t know! 
Towards the end, Washington DC gets overrun by Colombians and the team has to kill them. There’s some drawn out attack sequence where everything is described in monotonous detail with military terms I don’t understand. I have a general revulsion to military weeaboos as they are sometimes called, so this stuff turns my stomach. It also features Kenichi, the main character of the animated Metropolis adaptation, which I DID see a long time ago! This little boy is killing people! It’s fine! Also it mentions Frau Bow from Gundam and discusses that she’s training to fight in a mobile suit to help support, but Peach and Samus are the ones who actually use the mobile suits. Peach kills people in the RX-78-2. I’m not sure how to feel about that. Another aside is King Boo is in the mix and he dies. How do ghosts die? Asking for a friend. 
There’s also some weird aside of the COD guys doing an arrest in Disneyland. Gaz, Soap, and Price all go there guns akimbo and chase down some dudes and some people die. I don’t think Disney would like that. This also comes out of nowhere, Gaz was playing fucking Go with this dude called Katsuie and it was practically a smash cut transition of “well I arrested a guy in Disneyland once wanna HEAR about it?” and it was. Something. I don’t understand why we did this.
We end with Krystal and Fox discussing that she’s breaking up with him because while he was held hostage, she got engaged to a woman and is unceremoniously dumping him. The scene was honestly kind of funny for the fact that she was having a lesbian three way in his fucking bathroom and then was like “Yeah we’re not dating anymore. I’m engaged. Later idiot!” while naked. Shortly after it’s decided that they need to bomb some German base, I think. So Bright Noah tells the crew to suit up and get ready, and so Krystal and her Lesbians fly off to go fight. Krystal ends up in a one on one with a dude called Scales who I’m unfamiliar with since I don’t know Star Fox lore but I’m sure it’s super important to Krystal. The duel ends so badly that Fox needs to jump in and he and Scales end up plummeting to their death out a window and also getting blown up by grenades. Fox just fucking died for the girlfriend that cheated on him the second he wasn’t home. Honey, you deserve more than this, and Krystal deserves to be treated better by the narrative as well. He gives his blessing as he’s dying, though, so it’s fine. 
The whole thing ends shortly after that. It was never completed, not that I think it could be, since I read all 91k words and I still don’t understand who is who, what’s going on, or why things are happening. Even if I did know all the characters featured I don’t think it’d help. I know about 50% of them and it’s not helpful at all. I completely forgot that Emerald is a thing. She’s the main villain! She’s hardly in it! The guy should have cut the shit and just written 
Tell’s recommendation? Don’t read this unless you’re really, truly a masochist. It’s not funny enough most of the time to justify the insanity. It’s sexist and racist. Chapters monotonously drone on with the same things happening almost every time. The bad sex isn’t even funny. Save yourself the trouble and if you really must know, check out the first few chapters only and then call it. The author has other works that I haven’t read but I’m not sure that I will based on the quality of this work, and they also published something as recently as 2017 meaning they could probably rise from the hiatus grave and kick my ass for trash talking them. 
One Sentence Review: Bright Noah doesn’t slap anyone.

Book Review. The Royal Navy Wasp: An Operational & Retirement History
So, I have another book from those fantastic people over at Pen & Sword Books to have a look at, this time it’s a subject matter with wings that are rotary rather than my usual fixed wing interest.
This publication looks at the small but mighty Westland Wasp, this was the first helicopter in the world to be designed to be deployed at sea.
The book begins by looking at the conditions during the post war period that lead to the development of the Wasp as a solution. Anti-Submarine operations using aircraft were nothing new, in fact aircraft have been used since the first world war to attack submarines, albeit in a much less sophisticated manner. During WWII though things were advancing rapidly but still ships and aircraft alike needed to catch their prey on the surface to launch an attack.
Technology continued to advance and by the 50s aircraft were able to detect even submerged vessels. It was at this point the Navy decided the use of a small helicopter that could be launched from destroyers and frigates as a weapon carrier in anti-submarine warfare operations could be an effective tool.
From the outset the book includes anecdotes from pilots and crew. From the test pilots, to those that were to use the aircraft in operations and finally those that went on to operate the aircraft in a civilian role. These are taken not only directly from the crew members or official reports, but also from articles in publications such as Cockpit! or Flight Deck Magazines for example. I found many of these to be really fascinating and I loved being able to read these first-hand accounts of what the aircraft was like to operate and the tasks it was asked to carry out.
Moving on we take a brief look at the company that would eventually go on to secure the contract for providing this ship-based aircraft, The Westland Aircraft Works, and how it came to purchase Saunders Roe and with it their prototype project P531. This aircraft was subsequently developed into the land-based Scout and what was briefly named the Sea Scout, which was the basis of what became the Wasp
The development of the Wasp during the early years is looked at, covering everything from engine improvements to safety systems such as the flotation devices for a ditched helicopter. Weaponry and aircraft roles are looked at next including the development of new roles for the Wasp to be utilised in as a counter to emerging threats such as the advent of the Fast Patrol Boat for example.
As the book continues we hear about the initial deployment of the aircraft to the vessels it was to serve from and the trials that those early crews faced, both the flight team and the ships company. More articles from Flight Deck and Cockpit provide a great insight to what these early days of Wasp operation was like.
There are more anecdotal articles describing first-hand what it was like to work with the aircraft including a brief diary covering a year of operations by a Naval Air Engineering Mechanic on board the HMS Naiad during the early 80s. There are also accounts from three different vessels carrying Wasps that were deployed during the ‘Cod Wars’ of the 70s. This makes for interesting reading due to the unusual and sensitive nature of the situation.
Returning to the 80s we head into the Falklands conflict, looking at the aircrafts first real operations in a theatre of war. This section begins with the account of the flight on HMS Endurance which was the only Navy vessel in the area when hostilities began, and it is during this account that we hear about the encounter between the Argentine submarine Santa Fe and the Wasp that saw the first guided missile ever fired by the Royal Navy not only being fired but also meeting its target.
Falklands missions are also described from Flights aboard several other vessels including HMS Plymouth, HMS Yarmouth, the hospital ship HMS Hydra along with HMS Herald and HMS Hecla. Missions after the surrender are also looked at from other vessels.
There are then more personal accounts from crews that flew the aircraft during its service with the Navy, including the book authors own experiences with the aircraft.
Moving away from the Wasps service to the UK the book takes a look at their 2nd lease of life which was to be found abroad. Service was to be seen with New Zealand, The Netherlands, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil and South Africa with some aircraft remaining in service well into the 90s and beyond, impressive considering the type first flew in 1962.
Finally, the book looks at the few Wasps that are still active although not in military service. With the aircraft now in civilian hands the trials and tribulations they have faced since becoming civilian owned are covered, such as an impromptu search and rescue mission during a 2016 air show after another aircraft was forced to ditch into the sea.
In conclusion, I have found this book to be a very interesting read. I found the stories from operations to be very compelling and those centred around operations in the Falklands in particular were my favourite part of the book. Whilst it is true that this is an aviation history book more than anything else there are still some great reference images for modellers alongside the fantastic stories and I don’t think the level of detail the book goes into should be off-putting to anyone with an interest in military, naval or aviation subjects.
